I’d been watching Craigslist for a good deal on a used piano for several months.   Although there has been no shortage of used pianos for sale, timing has been the issue.  Either I’ve found a good deal but haven’t had the money, or had the money but couldn’t find the piano.

Well, my patience has been rewarded, because a pretty nice piano finally landed in my driveway, literally.

It’s a 1961 (or so) Janssen, in good condition.  It plays really well, even after being moved in the back of a pick-up truck.  The seller had bought it for a friend and then found that the friend couldn’t keep it because it wouldn’t fit in his apartment.  Apparently the piano had been listed in Craigslist previously, but because it was in College Station and whoever bought it would have to either move it or pay to have it moved, there were no bidders.  When I called to inquire about it, the seller was on his way to College Station to get the piano and bring it to Austin.  He said that he had a lady in Round Rock (my neck of the woods) who asked to look at it, so he was going to drive over to her house on Sunday afternoon.  Then, if she passed on the deal, he’d drive it over to my house to let me look at it.

Well, I didn’t get my hopes up, but on Sunday afternoon he called on his way back from College Station and said he could bring it over.  The other lady, he told me, hadn’t answered her phone so he decided to come by my place, first.

So, here come two guys in a truck, in my driveway with a decent piano for a decent price.  How could I pass that opportunity?  One of the things I’d factored into my budget was moving the piano, and here it was!  Delivery alone saved me about $100.

The piano was tuned about 4 months ago, and it sounds really good.  I’ll have it tuned soon anyway, since it was driven a pretty long way on the back of a pick-up.  Meantime, the boys and I are having a lot of fun and I’ve even given them their first lesson on rhythm and tempo.

It’s been a really long time since I’ve been able to play a piano.  Since I can read music, as well as teach scales and chords, what I think I’ll do is first take lessons myself, then teach the boys from what I learn.

Yeah!  We can add piano lessons to the syllabus!
