I was mean today.
I said something to someone that I now regret. I really didn't mean to, it's just that the exercising of tact has never been one of my strong skills and today I was pushed beyond my ability to nod and smile and not say anything if I have nothing nice to say.

We have two great big brown spots in our yard where the grass has completely given up because after 3 summers in this house I am still not used to not having an automatic sprinkler system and this has been one HOT, DRY summer.

I was thinking that an exercise buddy might help motivate me to get in better shape. The trouble is, I've always been kind of a loner and the idea of having a scheduled commitment to "work out" has never appealed to me.
Back when I was a teenager, my mom and her friends formed a diet club they named "Fat City." Each month, the ladies would get together and weigh in, then enjoy a celebratory feast. If anyone gained weight, they had to contribute a certain amount of money to the kitty, which would be used to finance something fun for the gang.
I must have been confused about the goal of the club, because I remember that by the end of the year the ladies had jointly contributed enough money to fund a trip, with spouses, to Las Vegas.

Grandpa Bif was a hoot and his brother-in-law, my Great-Uncle Charlie was a character, too. If I remember correctly, Uncle Charlie and my Grandma Julia were 2 of 14 siblings whose parents emigrated to the U.S. from Finland. What I've never understood is why these people would come all the way from the bitter, harsh, and cold of Finland only to settle in the bitter, harsh, and cold of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. For Heaven's sake, this is America, pick a new climate!
